Meet GIGI: Q&A with Leila S.

Girls Inc. Indy participant, Leila S., has been involved with Young Women in Leadership for four years. Now as a high school senior and preparing for college, Leila shares how her confidence has grown over her time in the program.

Q: What was your life like before joining Girls Inc.?
A: Before joining Girls Inc. I was incredibly shy and nervous, so I often struggled to participate in group activities and make friends.

Q: What challenges or barriers were you facing?
A: My biggest barrier was myself and feeling that for some reason I was not good enough to be seen and heard by my peers.

Q: What were your interests or aspirations?
A: I’m really interested in science, design, and creative problem solving, so I aspire to go to Purdue for engineering.

Q: What was the goal you were working toward?
A: Being a senior and preparing for college, I’m working on finding and advocating for myself as I transition into adulthood.

Q: What obstacles did you have to overcome?
A: Before joining Girls Inc., I struggled with confidence, so I was always hesitant to join clubs and put my opinion out there. Now I’m an active member in six clubs at my school and always the first person to volunteer aid and suggestions when planning events.

Q: What specific program, mentor, or experience helped you along your journey? What steps did you take to achieve your success?
A: My mentor Mrs. Payne has been a huge help by encouraging me to step out of my shell and to be confident in professional situations.

Q: What have you learned from Girls Inc.? How has your confidence, leadership, or mindset changed?
A: Working in Girls Inc. has taught me to have faith in my personal knowledge, skills, competence, and ability to take on difficult tasks.

Q: What would you say to other girls considering joining Girls Inc.? How has Girls Inc. made a difference in your life?
A: Girls Inc. teaches you how to be your own person by providing you mentoring and real world experience that is crucial as you continue on in life, so I wouldn’t waste that opportunity.
