The Girls Inc. team is gearing up for an exciting summer! We are honored to present a new program this June called Eureka!. Eureka! is a 5-year STEM focused educational and personal development program that focuses on instilling confidence in girls that they can succeed in STEM studies and be leaders in STEM careers. The program presents a strong opportunity for leadership development and will begin in June 2019 with a cohort of 25-30 rising 8th graders from all around the city. These students will continue in the program until their high school graduation.
Eureka! kicks off with a 4-week summer camp on the campus of IUPUI in the School of Informatics and Computing. Camp begins June 17 and ends July 12. Over the course of the 4-week camp, Eurekans participate in hands-on STEM projects hosted by female-lead STEM professional teams from the Indianapolis community.
In the first week, professors and graduates from our host, IUPUI School of Informatics and Computing, lead workshops exploring Juneteenth through Library Science, introduce Eurekans to Bio-Health Informatics, and dive into Human-Centered Computing through Design Thinking. In week two Eurekans explore construction the engineering and math of construction with Turner Construction and a visit to one of their active construction sites. They dive deeper into engineering with a visit to Cummins for more hands-on activities. Week three focuses on technology. Professionals from Salesforce will guide students as they develop apps which they later present to a panel of Salesforce team members. In the final week, students get their hands dirty with Corteva Agriscience as they discover where our food comes from.
The Eureka! program is committed to growing leadership and personal skills in conjunction with STEM knowledge. We open our program with a teambuilding and high ropes challenge at Camp Jameson where the cohort of 30 students connect and push each other to overcome new challenges. Over the course of the summer and into the school year, students develop service-learning projects that connect STEM to other personal passions. Self-confidence serves girls in any field. To foster this growth, Eurekans participate in two classic Girls Inc. programs, Healthy Sexuality and Redefining Beauty.
Among our weekly field trips is a visit to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. Eurekans have an early morning start and spend the day in Chicago visiting exhibits that illustrate how technology continues to transform our lives.
Eureka! continues into the 2019-2020 academic year with a year-round calendar of workshops, field trips, interaction with local, female STEM professionals. Each year the program adds a new cohort of 25-30 girls. As the students progress through the program, they participate in internships, college courses for credit, and much more. The program follows students through high school graduation.
