Last Friday we wrapped up our 4-week long summer camp! Each week of camp focused on a certain theme relating to our mission statement: strong, smart, bold, and inspired. This year, over 60 girls between the ages of 6-14 participated in the fun activities and trips we planned throughout camp.
During Strong week, the girls learned all about physical fitness and nutrition! They participated in self-defense classes through the Girls Inc. Project BOLD program, attended nutrition classes led by the Purdue Extension, participated in cooking classes led by Stargazer, partook in yoga classes, and competed in obstacle courses with Playworks Games. The cooking classes were a hit among the girls as they learned to make turkey pesto wraps.
The second week of camp was Smart week, in which the girls focused on STEM, community service, and college and career activities. This year, we partnered with Bricks 4 Kidz to provide the girls with hands-on STEM activities. Bricks 4 Kidz brought Lego kits for the girls to become engineers for the week as they built various motorized Lego models. Other highlights of the week included working with Project Purse to fill purses with notes and items for women in need, traveling to Indiana University for a college tour, and the Economic Literacy Carnival. Throughout Smart week, the 12-14 year olds come up with their own business plans, and then the Economic Literacy Carnival gives these girls the chance to put their business plans in action!
Bold week of camp was all about positive messaging. The girls participated in the Girls Inc. programs Redefining Beauty and Media Literacy to learn how to navigate negative media messaging and break down gender stereotypes. They also worked with Brave Youth Society and Social Justice Writing to practice their acting and writing skills. On Thursday of Bold week, all of the summer campers attended the Touchstone Awards Luncheon, the annual fundraiser for Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis. Attending the luncheon is always a great opportunity for the girls to share what they have learned so far during camp with the attendees, in addition to hearing the four women honored at the event speak about how they got to where they are today.
Lastly, Inspired week of camp focused on the arts in addition to the girls putting on the End of Camp Talent Show. This year the girls made dream catchers and worked with Classical Music Indy, ArtReach, Arts for Learning, Kids Dance Outreach, and Rhythmic Alchemy to practice their music, visual arts, and dancing talents. On the last day of camp, the girls participated in the Talent Show in front of their friends and families. The talent show is always a favorite for the girls to show off their singing, dancing, and acting skills!
Thank you to all of our supporters (listed below) and partners who helped make this camp possible. We can’t wait for next year’s summer camp!
