By volunteering at Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis, not only are you signing up for a chance to change the lives of girls in your community, you are also beginning a process that could change your own life as well! So what do you need to know so you can begin your time as a volunteer?
What do volunteers do?
Volunteers engage girls throughout greater Indianapolis using our fun, hands-on, and highly-researched curriculum. We equip volunteer teams with easy-to-use lesson plans and program supplies, and we provide comprehensive training and ongoing support during their service. The programs are delivered in one-hour sessions which run for six consecutive weeks. Volunteers can select which Girls Inc. program they’d like to lead and the age group they’d like to work with. All of our programs are customized for three different age groups: 6-8, 9-11, and 12-14. The Girls Inc. programs include Economic Literacy, Work It Out, Redefining Beauty, and Media Literacy.
Where and when do volunteers lead programs?
Girls Inc. volunteers engage girls at partner locations throughout greater Indianapolis. The programs take place Monday-Friday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. based on the partner location. Our volunteers select their program (date, time, and location) based on their schedules, making their volunteer experience uniquely suited for them.
What is the process like to become a volunteer?
First of all, to become a Girls Inc. volunteer you must be 18 years old or over. Then, you must apply to become a volunteer here. After that, you must complete the following steps:

Do volunteers actually make a difference in girls’ lives?
Definitely! Volunteers help girls grow, learn, express themselves, and defy stereotypes. If you want a good example of how girls are impacted by Girls Inc. programs, just read this story from Girls Inc. program support coordinator Candice Lofton about the experience of some of her volunteers:
“This cycle, I had an awesome pair of volunteers who really bonded with their girls. At the end of every session that I visited, the volunteers would get bombarded with hugs because the girls did not want the session to end. Their program recently ended, and when asked about their favorite memory over the 6 weeks, one girl enthusiastically said “This was the BEST TIME OF MY LIFE!” She also wrote that in as an option on her Girl Survey.”
If you are unable to volunteer at Girls Inc. but know someone who might love this opportunity, take the time to share this article with them! You never know when you might change someone’s life by introducing them to Girls Inc.!
