As I am entering my fourth year at Girls Inc. Indy, I thought that I would take the time to reflect on my work here. I facilitate many programs within the city for girls ages 6 – 18 and am also a leader of The Young Women in Leadership Program (YWIL), an extension of the wonderful programs that Girls Inc. offers. This program allows many of the 8th – 12th grade girls we serve to gain excellent leaderships skills before graduating high school.

Over the past three years, I’ve had the opportunity to meet many girls. Often times, I walk away from programs knowing that I have planted seeds in girls that will eventually blossom, turning them into strong, smart, and bold women. However, I do not always get to see the fruit of my labor through weekly programs, but the YWIL Program has allowed me to take on more of a mentoring role, allowing me to see girls grow over time. It means so much to me when I can actually see the seeds that I have planted finally blossom.

Below is a testimony of one particular YWIL participant who I have had the opportunity to educate and enlighten:

“My journey with Girls Inc. has been phenomenal. Throughout the YWIL Program, I’ve learned things about myself that I didn’t even know; like, that I am an extrovert. I’ve had the chance to build a bond with girls from all over Indiana with different backgrounds, stories, and personalities. I also now have wonderful mentors that have poured into me and taught me the key things I need to be a successful leader. Girls Inc. has even pushed me and grown on me so much, I took it upon myself to start my own business that will launch May of 2017 (Imperfectly Polished LLC). I’ve been inspired and have learned how important it is to not wait on your dreams and start building your future now. I have been given opportunity after opportunity by Girls Inc; I’ve gone on many college tours, seen different centers, and have learned a lot through panels on leadership and being strong, smart, and bold. I even landed a job through Girls Inc. as a Junior Girl Engagement Specialist, to work with girls from my YWIL group along with more mentors and staff. Girls Inc. is a magnificent program and I am so glad to be a part of it. “

Ronasiah has received and applied all of the skills she has learned not only from parents and other mentors from the community, but in particular from Girls Inc. to achieve her dreams. To acknowledge this incredible transformation is such a blessing to me, and makes my heart smile.
