Our chatter whirls around the dinner table, out the door, and down the steps to the kiddie pool. Thirteen people scrunch around the dinner table—passing salt, bumping elbows. About four different conversations babble on, making each conversationalist roar above the next.
Sometimes I feel overwhelmed with how large my immediate family has grown as siblings get married and have children, but then I remember what my grandfather always says, “Life would be boring without the love of family.”
I’d like to extend my grandfather’s sentiment, though. If you have family, make sure you actively show them that you care, and what better time to start than now?
August is Family Fun Month, so hit the town and build some lasting bonds. Here are some family-friendly events around the Indy area in August:
Monument Circle Tours
Fridays & Saturdays
Want to know more about the history of the heart of Indianapolis? Check out the free walking tours hosted by Indiana Landmarks Center that depart at 10 a.m. every Friday and Saturday in August. Older kids and teens will enjoy learning how the original architectural plan for Monument Circle never came to fruition. Instead, we have the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument there today.
Family Day: Art Olympics
The Indianapolis Museum of Art’s galleries and gardens will be teeming with physical and mental challenges from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The museum suggests you wear comfortable clothes and shoes, so you’re prepared for a day of play with thought-provoking activities.
Kids 12 and under get in free! Head to German Park, located on the south side of Indianapolis right off of Meridian Street, to eat some food, listen to live music, and celebrate summer. The festivities will be going on from 5:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
2016 Saxony Concert in the Park: Toy Factory
Does your family love to dance? Then this free concert might be just right for you!. Eat your fill from on-site food trucks or pack your own picnic dinner to take to Witten Park in Fishers. The music will be jamming from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., so dance the night away to Toy Factory’s infusion of jazz, gospel, classical, soul, R & B, rock, funk and a little bit of country.
Broad Ripple Carnival
Celebrate Indiana’s bicentennial at Broad Ripple Park! The carnival will reimagine Broad Ripple Park as it was in the early 1900s. The four day festival will feature carnival rides and games, food and drink, live entertainment and community booths. Broad Ripple Gazette will display a history exhibit, and Sunday will feature an artisan and vintage market. RSVP to the Facebook event to see what events will be happening each day.
