Young, Megan ColorPrintMegan Young is one amazing volunteer! She is currently completing her fourth program, totaling 77 volunteer hours thus far. Megan has fully embraced her role as a Volunteer Program Facilitator. She is one of our most dedicated volunteers. She is an exceptional listener, is relatable, and meets the girls where they are; she has been able to build an amazing trust and confidence with the girls. How did you learn about Girls Inc.?

“F. A. Wilhelm Construction sponsored a table at the 2014 Touchstone Awards, and has sponsored a table every year since. I was able to attend the luncheon, meet some of the girls, and hear from some amazing women in the community.”

Why did you choose to volunteer with Girls Inc.?

“I chose to volunteer because my time was available. I wanted to partner with an organization who makes a difference in the community. Girls Inc. empowers young ladies to be all they can be, and I’m thankful to be a part of it.”

What have you enjoyed most about volunteering with Girls Inc.?

“I have enjoyed most seeing girls grow and understand each other in a group setting. When they begin to understand the concepts we’re teaching, they open up and appreciate the other girls for what they’re learning together.”

Does any facilitation memory or any one of the girls stand out to you? Explain.

“I really enjoy teaching Redefining Beauty. I’ve taught it twice now, and each time you can tell the girls really enjoy discussing this topic. It’s something they can open up about in front of each other. My favorite part of Redefining Beauty is the “Dear Body” messages. The girls are taught to think differently about their bodies, and thank them for being a resource instead of how they look.”

Why do you think Girls Inc. programs are beneficial to girls?

“Oh my gosh! Where do I start? It’s something to say when the same group of girls continue to come back to Girls Inc. year after year. That’s how you know the programs are effective for every girl. When they enjoy it, I definitely enjoy it more.”

Have you noticed any changes in your own life since volunteering with Girls Inc.?

“I’ve turned into a major girl advocate. Getting ready to have my own girl in June, I’m looking forward to helping her crush gender stereotypes, and work through all those same struggles Girls Inc. helps girls in the community overcome.”

What kind of things have you learned after facilitating a Girls Inc. program?

“As a woman professional in the workforce, I am constantly reminded of my own values as a female. Girls Inc. instills these values in young girls to grow up with and put into practice, as they go out into the world and make their mark. The girls I’ve worked with, and other facilitators I’ve partnered with, have taught me what it looks like to reevaluate my circumstances through unbiased lenses. Being a girl is powerful, and I love sharing that message with our girls.”

Tell a tip for volunteer program facilitators about volunteering or working as a team.

“Don’t get discouraged if the girls start out quiet. Girls Inc. has some great resources on how to engage a quiet group, so use your Program Support Coordinators.”
