Hana started volunteering with Girls Inc. in 2010! Since joining Girls Inc. as a volunteer, Hana has shown her passion for the mission and for girls over and over. Hana is beyond dedicated to her commitment here at Girls Inc. She has not let anything get in the way of her commitment to the girls. She has been known to even ride her bike or run from her office to go lead her program. This current Fall I cycle, Hana is now signed up and is leading her 15th program with Girls Inc. Hana has also participated in 3 Lunch Bunches in the past. We are so grateful to Hana for her support, passion, dedication, and commitment to Girls Inc. Meet Hana Baker, this month’s featured volunteer!
How did you learn about Girls Inc.?
Hana: I drove by everyday on my way to and from work and decided to check it out. Once I learned what Girls Inc. was about, I knew immediately that I wanted to be involved.
Why did you choose to volunteer with Girls Inc.?
Hana: I left home when I was 18 and put myself through school. Many people helped me along the way; I want to give back and help other girls reach their full potential, as was done for me.
What have you enjoyed most about volunteering with Girls Inc.?
Hana: The girls! I love walking into a school that I have been to before and having one of my former girls run up to me and give me a hug…I wouldn’t trade that in for anything!
Does any facilitation memory or any one of the girls stand out to you? Explain.
Hana: There was a girl in one of my programs that had a tough time; she was kicked out of school for fighting, and missed our second session. This girl was back for our third session and did an amazing job for the rest of the program; she amazed me with how well she did. The next program I was back at her school and heard that she was having trouble as home and school, I asked if I could come and have lunch with her once a week to be someone she could talk to – two years later we still have lunch together.
Why do you think Girls Inc. programs are beneficial to girls?
Hana: Yes!! I love making it our girls club where they can just come and talk about girls; I think it’s a place for them to come that is just their own with discussions just for them. They learn how to navigate the world outside, and how to develop positive friendships with other girls. I wish my daughters had Girls Inc. at their schools!
Have you noticed any changes in your own life since volunteering with Girls Inc.?
Hana: Yes!! Girls Inc. has really helped me prioritize my life.
What kind of things have you learned after facilitating a Girls Inc. program?
Hana: I have learned that life isn’t fair; the girls in our programs are amazing! I have a true appreciation for teachers because some days I am exhausted after our one hour session and they do it all day everyday…they truly are amazing!
