Hana Baker’s commitment to inspiring girls is undeniable. Despite balancing a busy work schedule and family obligations, Hana is one of the first to sign up to volunteer each program cycle—she’s about to lead her seventh six-week program of the past two years! Her own experiences and her passion for the Girls Inc. mission have allowed her to excel as an engaging, compassionate volunteer program facilitator. We are thrilled that she is a part of our Girls Inc. team! Read on to learn more about her experience.
What is it like to facilitate a program?
“Facilitating a program for the first time was terrifying; I thought I had to know everything. What I have learned is that I don’t have to know everything—I am learning right along with the girls. The most important part of facilitating is listening; the girls have so much to offer and a different view of things!”
Did you notice a change in the girls’ behavior as your class went on?
“It was the most amazing thing to watch. One girl who had been suspended for fighting, and whose only means of solving difficult situations was to fight, ended up becoming one of our greatest contributors in the group. I will never forget her—I hope that she takes advantage of what the world has to offer her!”
How have your own experiences influenced you as a facilitator?
“I left home when I was 18 and put myself through school, and now I have a beautiful family and the job I always wanted. It was a tough road, but I did it, and I want the girls to know that they can do it too. I think girls need to see examples of successful women who can be one more layer outside their home lives of what they can be and what they can do. I just want them to know that there is so much out there for them!”
Any advice for other volunteer program facilitators?
“Be patient, don’t give up and don’t be surprised when the girls change you!”
Thank you Hana for inspiring girls in greater Indianapolis to be strong, smart, and bold!
