Girls are bombarded with media messages presenting an unattainable, unhealthy standard of beauty and viewing mainstream media images has proven association with negative body image. (See our Girls Inc. Guide on Body Image.) Commercials seek to persuade women and girls of the many things they need to be beautiful, fun, fit, in-style, etc.
Girls ages 9-11 reject this messaging in our Redefining Beauty program. After dissecting advertisements and media messages, girls discover their own definition of beauty and create a commercial telling the audience about everything that makes them beautiful. Many commercials the girls write stand out to our program facilitators, including the one below. America let us borrow her commercial to share with you.
