There is a quote that has shaped me for many years. In fact, the words face me each day from a coffee mug on my desk as a constant reminder of why my individual actions, and that of my colleagues, are so important.
These words may be familiar to you: “Never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
This quote comes from Margaret Mead, a noted anthropologist. Mead, while controversial in her own right, was best known for her research of gender and sexuality in primitive societies. I was introduced to her work while in college my freshman year. Coincidentially, Mead attended the same university, but only for one year. I always wondered if she ever felt the significance of her own words when she was walking the very campus I was.
I’m reminded of her words day after day at Girls Inc. because we are a small, but mighty staff. It may seem as though our work ends at county lines, but the truth is, our reach goes beyond even the girls we serve. Our girls share what they learn with their friends and families, and that message spreads to their communities. Our girls think globally and want to make a difference in our world. If you don’t believe me, read this post.
Though we often don’t have the opportunity or capability to see the final impact of our programs, I am certain that we are equiping girls to take their place in the world and change it for the better. And I never doubt that a small group of women or girls can change the world.
