As the Summer AmeriCorps VISTA Parent Engagement Specialist, I have had to opportunity to not only interact with the wonderful girls at the Girls Inc. summer camp, but their committed and supportive parents and guardians as well. Since the first session began on June 20, I have had the chance to hear directly how important an all girls summer camp is to parents and guardians, and why they think that Girls Inc. summer camps provide the best summer experiences for their girls.
Although I have not engaged in many hands-on activities with the girls of summer camp, I have been able to interact with them during the different programs. I have happily watched and listened as girls discussed the ways that they have grown and the things that they have learned since starting with Girls Inc. This has truly been a treat! I began this experience anticipating the ways that I would interact and engage with parents – I had not anticipated the many positive things I would gain from the interaction with the girls. Girls Inc. summer camp really does help inspire girls to be strong, smart, and bold!
So far, this has been a great adventure and a wonderful learning opportunity. As a liaison between the camp and home, I have been able to share insightful and encouraging news with parents and guardians as I am able to witness firsthand the wonderful things the girls learn, do, and share during camp. I look forward to seeing all of the parents, guardians, family, and friends at our end of camp talent show on July 29. It will be a great way to close out the summer!
