Program Spotlight - Girls Inc. Project Bold®

Girls learn how to stay safe and master basic self-defense techniques

Too often girls and young women are confronted with abuse, harassment, and dating violence. Girls Inc. arms girls with the tools they need to protect themselves and advocate for their right to be safe. This month, we highlight our Project BOLD program to continue our program spotlight series.

Project BOLD helps girls identify resources and a trusted adult to increase their personal safety, while providing basic self-defense techniques. This violence-prevention program provides a safe environment for girls to ask questions, get answers, and feel supported.

  • 6-to-8 year-old girls participate in Girls Stay Safe which helps them to recognize hurtful and harmful situations, the importance of telling a trusted adult, and basic techniques to ensure personal safety.
  • 9-to-11 year-old girls participate in Action for SafetySM which encourages using mind, voice, and flight for protection, helps distinguish between being angry and being in danger, reinforces awareness, and provides various techniques to ensure personal safety.
  • 12-to-14 year-old girls participate in Living Safe and StrongSM which prompts conversations to combat dating violence, differentiates between sexual harassment and flirting, encourages advocating against violence in their community, and provides a range of self-defense techniques.

Our Project BOLD programs are delivered at our program partners’ facilities by well-trained facilitators using Girls Inc. curricula. Visit our website to learn more about volunteering or other programs.
