Many education majors will tell you that the best story book to read in the month of January is Martin’s Big Words by Doreen Rappaport. This story is not just one for children; as you turn each page you are drawn into the life of one of America’s greatest leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
As we honor this great leader today, I am reminded of the inspiration Dr. King presented to our entire nation. He knew that with hard work his dreams could become a reality. We each have our own dreams and while the details vary, we know that in order to fulfill these visions we have to take action.
And in order to take action, we must feel inspired. One of the best motivators for me comes from Martin Luther King Jr.’s mother in Martin’s Big Words: “You are as good as anyone.”
As Dr. King motivated citizens to make a difference, Girls Inc. motivates young girls to dream and to work hard making their dreams a reality. Each day Girls Inc. volunteers and staff remind our girls that they are as a good as anyone else, and by doing so we are motivating them to reach their greatest potential.
In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, look in the mirror today and remind yourself that “you are as good as anyone.”
