Our program staff is gearing up for another exciting school year! One of the programs we’re most excited about this year is Young Women in Leadership (YWIL). YWIL is a school-year-long program for girls entering grades 9-12 focused on leadership development and college and career preparedness. This will be our 5th year running the program and we’re working hard to make it the best yet. The girls in our YWIL program come from high schools throughout the Greater Indy area. We’ll meet twice per month for a variety of fun, engaging, and educational activities. YWIL is a fantastic opportunity for participants to improve self-confidence, learn how to set and reach goals, gain new leadership skills, and prepare for college and future careers.

YWIL girls will participate in team-building activities to help us develop into a cohesive group in a fun and engaging way, as well as take part in several hands-on workshops throughout the year. Topics include learning how to tell your own story, using setbacks as a setup for success, becoming an entrepreneur, making social media work for you, resume development and mock interviews, and finding your cause and advocating for it. Girls in the program will also go offsite for career panels with professional women in the community to learn about their experiences, challenges they’ve faced, lessons they’ve learned, and barriers they’ve broken down. Throughout the year, members of our program staff will sit down with the girls for one-on-one check-ins, where we’ll talk about their life and school goals, and map out steps to meet those goals.

The girls will go on group college tours, and some will have the opportunity to take an out-of-state trip to experience a new city and culture. The details of this year’s trip are still being planned out, but past YWIL participants have visited Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and most recently, New York City. In addition to all of these great experiences and learning opportunities, YWIL participants are also eligible to apply for college scholarships offered by Girls Inc.’s national office. Program staff will help mentor and guide girls through the scholarship application process.

We couldn’t be more excited about the year ahead for the girls in this program! There are currently still a handful of spots available. We’re looking for young women who are motivated, responsible, and great leaders. We officially kick off the program in mid-September, so if you know a girl who would be a good fit, please encourage her to apply! The application is located on our website. After filling out the application, girls must also submit a copy of their transcripts and a letter of recommendation. We then interview potential candidates in person and follow up with a phone interview with the girl’s parent or guardian.

Young Women in Leadership is an incredible program and we cannot wait for another successful year!
