Favorite Part of the Program
“Meeting and engaging with the girls! Why? You do not realize the impact you make until you are in the classroom and they are giving you feedback, laughing and smiling, and listening to what you have to say.”

Experience Leading a Program
“[I was] a little nervous at first. You want to make a good impression and get your message across to the girls, but after the first class, you start reaping the rewards of interpersonal relationships.”

Change in Girls’ Behavior in the Program
“The girls started to open up and become more engaging. You build relationships with the girls, and as time goes on, these relationships become stronger and girls look forward to the class.”

Girls Inc. Volunteer Training
“The scenarios and FAQs answered clarified the concerns that each volunteer may have and I felt more comfortable with facilitating a program.”

Why She Chose to Volunteer with Girls Inc.
“Girls Inc. is a wonderful organization, putting strong, bright women out there to serve girls in communities that need it most. And for me that’s personal- I wouldn’t be who I am without having had women that acted as mentors, role models, teachers and friends. I’m so thankful for the time they’ve taken to care about me and Girls Inc. provides a wonderful platform for me to make that same sort of investment in other young women.”

Favorite Part of the Program
“I LOVED talking about gender stereotypes with the girls- their different levels of awareness were funny to observe! It’s really easy to forget how pervasive our culture’s messages are- telling little girls what it means to be female. As someone with a communication background, I remember how eye opening these type of discussions were in college, and I loved the chance to introduce these same type of ideas to a younger group of minds. “Cute” doesn’t have to be why they choose a lunchbox and the only difference between “boy” Lego’s and “girl” Lego’s is that a marketing executive chose different packaging!”

Experience Leading a Program
“I was prepared for a rough reception from a group of 3rd-5th graders, on Monday’s, after a long day of school, who were having to listen to one more adult talk. Further, I thought buying into a topic like “Media Smarts” might take some time. Luckily, I couldn’t have been more wrong. From our first class, to the last, they were fun, bubbly and excited to participate and learn!”

Why Girls Inc. Programs Benefit Girls
“The girls I have worked with seem to benefit the most when important ideas can be discussed in open conversations with other girls their own age. The exercises in the programs help even shy girls participate in meaningful ways.”

The Impact on One Girl
“There was an endearing 9 year-old in one program whose mother had died several months before and who was new to the school due to moving in with another relative. It was wonderful to watch her make new friends and open up to the other girls about her feelings.”

Volunteer Work in the Community
“I am a volunteer mentor with the Starfish Initiative, a one-on-one match program for 21st Century Scholars starting in their freshman year and continuing throughout high school. I also assist a back-to-work. non-profit group called Training Inc, and I am a volunteer screener of nominations submitted to the Indy Film Fest.”
