Meet Girls Inc. Volunteers!
Sharon Gatlin-Chambers
Economic Literacy and
Work it Out Facilitator
How Girls Inc. Training Helped Prepared Her
"I can often take a position of authoritarian with youngsters. The training helped me listen and work with them. [It] helped me understand how not to tell them but guide them to discovery on their own."
Witnessing Growth in the Girls
"[There were] four girls having conflict, always about a boy (or food). When they came in you could feel the tension in the air. We had them talk it out and by the end of the program they all hugged each other. Perhaps that wasn’t a permanent fix, but it helped them see that they can talk their disagreements out rather than fighting about them."
How She Would Have Benefitted from Girls Inc. as a Girl
"I would have had more focus on my journey. It would have given me more clarity on hurdles, and a higher self-esteem. Everyone has similar struggles. You don’t always recognize what others are going through, though Girls Inc. helps with that."

Redefining Beauty, Economic Literacy, and Work it Out Facilitator
Her Favorite Program to Facilitate
"Redefining Beauty, all of it, as girls all have a hard time [with body image]. I worried when I was younger about looks. Why do girls view things the way they view it, where are they getting messages?"
On Facilitating a Program
"[At first it was] scary and exciting getting to know the girls and how they reacted. It was good to work with Sharon."
How Girls Inc. Programs Benefit Girls
"A lot of girls are having a lot of trouble. We tell them, ‘don’t listen to the nay-sayers, and don’t let anyone tell you who you can or can’t be.'"
Why she chose Girls Inc.
"I always wanted to give back and work with girls. And I would have liked it when I was younger."

Work It Out Facilitator
Junior League of Indianapolis
Favorite Part to Teach
"The day we talked about bullying we did a role playing scenario in which the girls said, 'Stop that,' or 'I don’t like that.' They were all on a bus and several role plays occurred. They seemed to enjoy it far more than hand-outs, [because] it was interactive. They got more out of it and remembered it really well. That was one that stuck with them, they really liked acting out."
How She Would Have Benefited from Girls Inc. as a Girl
"I would have made new friends, been more accepting of those who were different. I was in a clique throughout middle and high school. I never learned about bullying outside of home. I think that it’s [Work it Out] great."
Why Girls Inc. Programs are Important
"Kids are more brazen and mean these days. It’s good for girls to know how to deal with different issues. They all seemed to have issues with boys bullying them. I think it is most important for [the] girls that they were outside their comfort zone."
