Girls Inc. would like to thank the Corporation for National and Community Service for its generous support through the AmeriCorps VISTA program! For the last three years, Girls Inc. has hosted several AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) members. This year, VISTA has continued its support of Girls Inc. by providing us with three VISTA members, whose terms of service run from August 2010 to August 2011.
VISTA members make a year-long, full-time commitment to serve at a nonprofit or public organization.
Instead of providing direct service, they work to increase the administrative, organizational, and financial capacities of an organization. Here at Girls Inc., this means that our VISTA members do not directly provide programs to girls—instead, they help develop and cultivate the resources that allow us to reach more girls than ever before. The VISTA members who have served at Girls Inc. have worked on a variety of capacity-building projects, focusing on areas like evaluation, fundraising, public relations, video production, technology development, and more.
VISTA is a national community service program that was created by President Johnson in 1965 with the mission of fighting poverty. In 1993, VISTA became a division of the AmeriCorps program, which is administered through the Corporation for National and Community Service.
